French language education in
Newfoundland and Labrador

The Provincial French-language School Board of Newfoundland and Labrador has six schools and 366 students from kindergarten to grade 12. No other school board in the province offers full-time French-language teaching. Teaching is available in four main areas of the province that include St. John’s, Labrador City, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Cape St. George and La Grand’Terre. Services offered by the French-language school board include:

  • Full-time kindergarten
  • Small community-based schools with mixed-age classes
  • Remedial tutoring
  • Free school bus transportation

The Fédération des parents francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador offers pre-schooling programs in French.  As well, in terms of postsecondary education, Memorial University offers undergraduate programs et courses in French Studies.
