Nearly 300,000 people can speak French, and French is the mother tongue of 1.4% of the population.
The town of Maillardville is historically one of the first French-speaking communities in the province.
The Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique has 47 schools and more than 6,200 students from kindergarten to grade 12. No other school board in the province offers the French as a first language program. French-language teaching is offered in over 100 communities throughout the province. Services offered by the French-language school board include:
- Early childhood services
- Childcare services at most of its schools
- a cultural integration service and a francization program,
- Cultural Education program
- International Baccalaureate program
- Laptops for every student and access to iPads for younger students
- Free school bus transportation.
