Alberta has approximately 81,000 francophones, or about 2% of its population.
Calgary and Edmonton have large French-speaking communities with several French-language institutions.
The Fédération des conseils scolaires francophones de l’Alberta has 45 schools attended by 9,540 students from kindergarten to grade 12. This federation is made up of four school boards: Conseil scolaire du Nord-Ouest, Conseil scolaire Centre-Est, Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord and Conseil scolaire FrancoSud. These school boards are entitled to provide French-language education in Alberta. No other school boards in that province offer the French as a First language program. Services offered by the French-language school board include:
- Full-time kindergarten
- French as a second-language remedial tutoring as well as cultural integration programs
- Online teaching
- Free school bus transportation.
