The Yukon has a significant French-speaking population, representing 4.6% of its inhabitants.
The Francophone festival “Solstice Saint-Jean” is celebrated in June in Whitehorse.
The Commission scolaire francophone du Yukon (CSFY) offers four programs to its 391 students: at the elementary level, École Émilie-Tremblay from kindergarten 4 to grade 6; at the secondary level, Centre scolaire secondaire communautaire Paul-Émile-Mercier from grades 7 to 12; home schooling with École Nomade from kindergarten 5 to grade 12; and the French as a first language program in Dawson.
The CSFY is the only school board in to offer the French as a first language program in the territory.
Services offered by the French-language school board include:
- Promoting Francophone culture; students develop their cultural identity and pride in being Franco-Yukoners
- Courses in French and English as first languages to enable students to perfect their bilingualism
- Close ties with an active and dynamic community
- Educational camps and trips for high school students,
- Full-day kindergarten,
- A francization program to enrich students’ French.
