French language education in
Alberta

Alberta’s Federation of Francophone School Boards has 44 schools and 9,540 students from kindergarten to grade 12. The federation is made up of 4 school boards (Conseil scolaire du Nord-Ouest, Conseil scolaire Centre-Est, Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord and Conseil scolaire FrancoSud). These school boards are entitled to provide French-language education in Alberta. No other school boards in that province offer full-time French-language teaching. Services provided include:

  • Full-time junior kindergarten
  • French as a second-language remedial tutoring as well as cultural integration programs
  • Online teaching
  • Free school bus transportation

French services in Alberta related to postsecondary education, literacy and adult continuing education are provided by the Alberta Collegial Centre in Edmonton and the St. John’s campus at the University of Alberta.
